What is White Ninja?

Text Jamey Hughton

Is it a practical joke, a phenomenon, a chemical imbalance in the brain? White Ninja Comics could be described as all or none of the above. This strange little comic strip, the brainchild of U of S students Scott Bevan (the creator) and Kent Earle (co-writer), is developing a cult following across campus, and whether it makes you laugh or merely insults your intelligence, you cannot deny that it's there. Scott and Kent were nice enough to sit down with us and discuss the epic saga of White Ninja.

THE SHEAF Describe White Ninja in one word.
SCOTT Crap.
KENT Tall.

Where do you get your inspiration for White Ninja?
S Meg Ryan. (Kent seems to find this extremely funny.)

What are three things people should know about White Ninja?
S We've been doing them since Grade 8, and originally there was eight people behind it. We have over 400 White Ninja adventures.
(I swell with pride to share with you readers that I, in fact, was one of these original eight artists. It remains the only truly significant and meaningful thing I've done in my lifetime.)
K He is white because black ninjas take too long to colour in.
S White Ninja is the ultimate crime-fighting hero.

Explain the origin of White Ninja.
S He was the son of a wealthy business tycoon.
K From the future!
S Yah, and he escaped to the present through a time portal in his linen closet.
K To start a rock and roll band.
S But then his band was killed.
K By Aslan!!!
(I must explain that Aslan is the lion from the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. Who knew Aslan was also a key player in the White Ninja saga?)
S Then he spent the next five years trying to avenge the death of his rock band.
K But he hit his head and got amnesia.
S So he wandered the streets for a couple of weeks.
K And then one day he fell into a vat of ooze.
S And then he morphed into a half-man, half-ninja!!! And now he is a comic super-hero.

What does the future hold in store for White Ninja?
S Magical powers.
K A wife and kids.
S White Ninja murder mysteries.
K Wild house parties.
S A side-kick.
K Celebrity friends.

And there you have it. Although I am still not certain if they are geniuses of complete idiots, these two young men have great ambition, and I look forward to further White Ninja adventures and the moment two hours after I read them and finally realize they're funny.
